Wednesday, Beth and I met about the iPads Deployment for this next year.
After further research here is the short version
We can't use Config 1 anymore
We have to use Config 2 to initially set up devices. Apple has a new management system that comes out this week called Apple School Manager. It works in concert with Configurator 2 and our MDM. The new system is nothing like the old system. However devices that have already been managed by the old system will still operate normally. Once devices need to be updated, then we will have to wipe devices and place them in the new system. Because we are basically being forced to move to a new system, we have options available to us that we have never had before. This would benefit the Intermediate campus tremendously.
You and I talked a little bit last week about the apple server that you have in there that you would like to get rid of. We actually may need that. As we continue to investigate this new system, because there is not a local computer that apps are stored on and devices call upon for updates, a caching server would likely be needed. This would prevent any possible bandwidth issues we may have had if all the iPads start trying to talk to the apple store when we are pushing out updates or apps. It is the bandwidth issue that I have been the most concerned with since config 2 doesn't have a local computer to store the updates. Caching server seems to be a must for us. We are still looking into what is required in setting up one of these.
We also discovered that this will indeed affect Kim's deployment. We are willing to help her in this transition. There just doesn't seem to be any way around it. She will need to make the transition during this year as well. We agreed that we would get a good handle on it first and then give her training on the new system.
